ABC's Jonathan Karl has issued a sobering warning about the upcoming 2024 presidential election, calling it the "most important election of our time."
ABC's Jonathan Karl has issued a stark warning about the upcoming 2024 presidential election, urging Americans to recognize its profound significance. Speaking on "This Week" Sunday, Karl emphasized that the stakes have never been higher and that the divisions in the country demand attention.
"For as long as I've covered politics, politicians have said this will be the most important election of our lifetimes," Karl said. "They said that no matter how high or low the stakes actually were. Election Day 2024 is exactly six months from today, and this time the divisions in our country are so vast and the choice so stark, there's little doubt this really is the most important election of our time. No more crying wolf. This is it."
Karl's warning echoes the concerns expressed by ABC's regular host George Stephanopoulos, who previously stated that the upcoming election is not an ordinary contest and will be a major test for the media and American citizens.
"It's all too easy to fall into reflexive habits, to treat this as a normal campaign, where both sides embrace the rule of law, where both sides are dedicated to a debate based on facts and the peaceful transfer of power," Stephanopoulos said. "But that is not what's happening this election year."
These warnings come after President Biden delivered a message to the press at the White House correspondents' dinner, urging them to "rise up to the seriousness of the moment" and focus on the high stakes of the election.
"Move past the horse race numbers and the 'gotcha' moments and the distractions and the sideshows that have come to dominate and sensationalize our politics, and focus on what's actually at stake," Biden said. "I think in your hearts, you know what's at stake. The stakes couldn't be higher."
Biden emphasized the need for the media to play a responsible role in ensuring that democracy endures.
Karl discussed a new ABC News/Ipsos poll released Sunday, which showed the race between Trump and Biden effectively tied. Trump holds a significant advantage on issues such as the economy, crime, and border security, while Biden leads on character.
Karl expressed concern over Trump's recent statements, particularly his refusal to say whether he would accept the results of the election and his ambiguous comments about potential violence.
"In a lengthy interview with Time magazine, the man who still refuses to accept the results of the last election refused to say whether he would accept the results of this one," Karl said. "And the man who saw his supporters attack the Capitol three years ago said there would not be violence this time if he wins, adding, quote 'and if we don't win, you know, it depends.'"
Karl warned that Trump's unwillingness to commit to a peaceful transfer of power is a serious threat to democracy.
"To be clear, Trump says no violence if he wins," Karl said. "All bets are off if he loses."
Karl's warning underscores the critical importance of the 2024 election and serves as a call to action for Americans to engage actively in the political process and demand accountability from their leaders.
