The Myrtle Beach community is mourning the loss of a beloved 95-year-old Navy veteran, Peter Pulkkinen, who tragically passed away in a car accident while on his way to meet friends for an early morning coffee.

On Saturday morning, September 17, 2023, Pulkkinen's car collided with a Myrtle Beach Fire Department (MBFD) vehicle at around 5:46 a.m. The incident occurred as the fire department was responding to a structure fire call.

MBFD personnel immediately rendered aid to Pulkkinen, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital. The two fire department employees involved in the accident sustained no physical injuries.

Peter Pulkkinen had served his country for 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, leaving an indelible mark on his community. His obituary described him as a "quiet man of integrity" who had a deep love for taking walks, reading, and spending time with friends.
