A Little League coach's criticism of Aaron Judge has ignited a debate about the responsibilities of professional athletes to young fans. Bob Laterza, coach of the South Shore Little League, accused Judge of ignoring the team at the Little League Classic, while the Yankees responded by defending their star player and highlighting his interactions with young players.
In the wake of a Little League coach's public criticism of Aaron Judge for allegedly ignoring his players, the New York Yankees have come to their captain's defense. The controversy has sparked a broader discussion about the expectations placed on professional athletes and their obligations to young fans.
Aaron Judge vs. Little League Coach: A Clash of Perspectives
Bob Laterza, the coach of the South Shore Little League representing the Metro region in the Little League World Series, called out Judge after the Major League star allegedly failed to interact with his team during the Little League Classic. "How about turning around or wave to New York and the kids that think you’re a hero?" Laterza said. "They are the ones who pay your salary."
The Yankees quickly responded with a statement, commending their players for their dedication to connecting with hundreds of young athletes before and during the game. The team emphasized that Judge and his teammates made a concerted effort to sign autographs and engage with as many Little Leaguers as possible.

"Our entire roster spent the day in Williamsport connecting with as many Little Leaguers as they possibly could prior to our game, including the team from Staten Island," the Yankees said.
The Yankees also clarified that they were not responsible for the schedule, which prevented Judge and his teammates from spending more time with the South Shore Little League team.

"In fact, because Staten Island played on Sunday, our players went out of their way to spend time with them in the moments immediately before our game with the Tigers," the Yankees added.
Laterza also made the claim that the Yankees typically invite the Metro region champions to a home game, but if the South Shore Little League team is invited, they "ain’t taking pictures with us either."
The Yankees responded by reiterating their commitment to inviting the team to the Bronx. "However, it would have been much better if Staten Island’s coach called us to understand the facts before bitterly reacting in such a public fashion," the team said. "Reaching out to us would have been the prudent way to act and would have set a fine example for his young players."
The Yankees praised Judge's character, highlighting his consistent kindness and respect towards young athletes. "Aaron Judge always acts with kindness and respect," the team said. "The coach could learn a lot from him."
Laterza's squad, who reached the World Series as New York's Metro region champions, were eliminated from the tournament on Tuesday. The incident has served as a reminder of the delicate balance between the obligations of professional athletes and the expectations of young fans.
