After initially suggesting Republican Senator Mitt Romney as the Democratic presidential nominee, Aaron Sorkin, the creator of the 1990s NBC drama "The West Wing," has reversed course, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president.
In a surprising turn of events, Aaron Sorkin, the renowned screenwriter and creator of the acclaimed TV series "The West Wing," has retracted his earlier suggestion that the Democratic Party nominate Republican Senator Mitt Romney as their presidential candidate in the 2024 election and instead endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.
Sorkin, who does not maintain a social media presence, reached out to his friend and "West Wing" star Joshua Malina via email on Monday to express his change of heart, following news that President Biden would be endorsing Harris. In the email, Sorkin stated, "I need to borrow your Twitter account again. 'I take it all back. Harris for America!'"

Sorkin's initial proposal, published in a New York Times op-ed on Sunday, sparked both intrigue and skepticism within political circles. The screenwriter argued that Romney, a moderate Republican, would be a formidable challenger to former President Trump and could potentially unify the country after a tumultuous period in American politics.
However, Sorkin has since acknowledged that his suggestion may not have been practical. In his email to Malina, he conceded, "The problem in the real world is that there isn't a Democrat who is polling significantly better than Mr. Biden. And quitting, as heroic as it may be in this case, doesn't really put a lump in our throats."

Sorkin's endorsement of Harris reflects a growing consensus among Democrats that the vice president is the strongest candidate to lead the party in 2024. Harris is currently unchallenged for the Democratic nomination, which will be formally decided at the party's convention in Chicago on August 19th.
Sorkin's change of heart highlights the fluid nature of the 2024 presidential race and the challenges facing the Democratic Party as they seek to navigate a complex political landscape. While Romney's nomination may have been an intriguing idea, it is ultimately Harris who has emerged as the frontrunner for the Democratic ticket.
As the race for the presidency heats up, it remains to be seen whether Sorkin's endorsement will have a significant impact on Harris's campaign. However, it is clear that the screenwriter's reversal on Romney underscores the importance of electability and pragmatism in the current political climate.
