"Anyone who's passionate about what we do knows there's no other business like it, so this was not an easy or quick decision," Godwin wrote in the email. "But after considerable reflection, I'm certain it's the right one for me as I look to the future and prioritize what's most important for me and my family."

Godwin's departure comes amid reports of tension within the network and criticism of her leadership style. Insiders at ABC argued that she had made several prominent mistakes, including creating an inner circle that alienated staffers.

According to Puck News, Godwin had privately complained of being micromanaged by Disney Networks president Debra OConnell. The outlet also reported that representation and the fact that Godwin is the first Black woman to head a broadcast news division had become the underlying problem in any discussions about the future of the company.

OConnell will temporarily head up ABC News after Godwin's leave. In a statement, she expressed gratitude for Godwin's work and stated that ABC News would continue its commitment to "trust, integrity, and a dogged determination to be the best in the business."

Godwin's retirement marks the end of a three-year tenure at ABC News. She was appointed in May 2021, becoming the first Black woman to lead a national news network. In her email to staff, she expressed pride in this accomplishment and praised the network for its long-standing reputation.

"I understood and appreciated the profound significance of being the first Black woman to lead a national broadcast news network when I accepted the role as president of ABC News a little over three years ago," she wrote. "It's both a privilege and a debt to those who chipped away at the ceiling before me to lead a team whose brand is synonymous with trust, integrity, and a dogged determination to be the best in the business."

Godwin's leadership at ABC News has been marked by several controversies. In 2022, she was criticized for her handling of an affair between anchors Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes. She was also accused of alienating staffers and creating a toxic work environment.

Despite these challenges, Godwin has also been credited with some positive changes at ABC News. She has launched new initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion, and she has worked to improve the network's digital presence.

Godwin's retirement leaves ABC News at a crossroads. The network is facing increasing competition from other news outlets, and it is struggling to find its footing in the rapidly changing media landscape. It remains to be seen how her departure will affect the network's future.
