"They opened their arms to me and gave me everything I needed to portray them," Ferrara reminisces. "I've been forever grateful ever since."

Over a decade later, Ferrara's connection with firefighters has only deepened. During his comedy tours, he makes an effort to visit local firehouses, shaking hands, expressing gratitude, and connecting with the men and women who selflessly serve their communities.

"The meal in the firehouse is sacred," Ferrara shares. "It's where family business is conducted. When I'm invited to sit at that table, it's an honor because I know what it means to the guys."

Ferrara's admiration for firefighters stems from their unwavering commitment to saving lives, even in the face of danger and adversity. He points to the FDIC, an annual conference for firefighters, as a testament to their dedication to training, networking, and mental health support.

"One of the things I'm really pleased about is the attention to mental health," Ferrara says. "They're really looking out for each other. There's peer support where they're talking to each other to deal with trauma. To be part of that is fulfilling for me."

Ferrara's admiration extends beyond the firehouse. He sees firefighters as a beacon of hope and unity in a society often divided by fear and uncertainty. "Firefighters run into burning buildings to save people they don't even know. That's acting out of courage," he says.

Ferrara recalls a pivotal moment on the set of "Rescue Me" that epitomized the extraordinary spirit of firefighters. "There was a car fire in Brooklyn, and we had real firefighters on set," he recounts. "During lunch hour, they left to put out a real fire. They came back smelling like barbeque, like it was nothing!"

"To us, it's an act of courage. For them, it's Tuesday," Ferrara marvels.

Ferrara's deep respect for firefighters is evident in his ongoing support for the FDIC, where he interacts with firefighters from across the country, sharing laughter, stories, and a mutual admiration for the selfless service they embody.

"When people are faced with fear and uncertainty, they will find like-minded people and label an enemy," Ferrara reflects. "Firefighters, on the other hand, run into danger to save strangers. That's acting out of courage. That's what I admire about them."
