Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office has announced that a number of additional women have alleged sexual assault against former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, prompting the possibility of a new indictment.

During Wednesday's court hearing, Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg disclosed that several women who were previously hesitant to testify have now expressed willingness to do so. When asked if prosecutors were considering filing a new indictment, Blumberg replied affirmatively.

In April 2022, a New York appeals court overturned Weinstein's 2020 rape conviction, ordering a new trial. The court ruled that the trial judge had improperly allowed prosecutors to introduce testimony from women whose allegations did not relate specifically to the charges against Weinstein.

Weinstein was originally sentenced to 23 years in prison for the 2006 rape of Mimi Haley and the 2013 sexual assault of Jessica Mann. However, he was acquitted of first-degree rape and two counts of predatory sexual assault stemming from Annabella Sciorra's claims.

Weinstein also appeared in court on May 9 for a hearing regarding his potential extradition to California. His legal team argued that he should not be extradited due to his need to prepare for the retrial and his "very serious health issues."

Diana Fabi Samson, Weinstein's attorney, emphasized that his medical concerns, which have required hospitalization since his incarceration, would be exacerbated by travel to California. Weinstein's next appearance in this matter is scheduled for Aug. 7.

In 2022, Weinstein was convicted in California of rape and other sexual misconduct charges involving a woman known as Jane Doe 1. He has not yet begun serving his 16-year sentence for that conviction due to the overturned New York conviction.

Weinstein's legal team has vowed to appeal the California conviction.

Authorities in both New York and California are pursuing charges against the former producer, while his defense team continues to contest the allegations.
