South Sudan's President Salva Kiir and rebel opposition groups gather in Kenya for high-level mediation talks aimed at ending years of conflict and fostering economic stability.
[Paragraph 1]
On Thursday, May 9th, high-level mediation talks commenced in Kenya to address the ongoing conflict in South Sudan. African presidents and international representatives gathered in Nairobi to call for an end to a conflict that has crippled the country's economy for years.
[Paragraph 2]
South Sudan's President Salva Kiir expressed gratitude to his Kenyan counterpart, William Ruto, for hosting the talks and pledged that his government would participate in good faith with an open mind. He stated, "We hope that the opposition groups share our conviction and aspire for peace, which will usher in lasting stability and economic prosperity in South Sudan and the region."
[Paragraph 3]
The talks involve the government and rebel opposition groups that were not signatories to the 2018 agreement that ended a five-year civil war that claimed 400,000 lives.
[Paragraph 4]
President Ruto stressed the importance of African solutions to African issues. He said, "This initiative embodies the Pan-African approach, promoting African-led solutions to African challenges, supporting the 'Silencing the Guns in Africa' initiative, and fostering an environment for transformative development in South Sudan and Africa."
[Paragraph 5]
Other regional leaders in attendance included Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera, Zambia's Hakainde Hichilema, Namibia's Nangolo Mbumba, and Central African Republic's Faustin-Archange Touadera. The launch followed an African Union agricultural summit held earlier in the day.
[Paragraph 6]
The U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Mike Hammer, expressed support for the talks, recognizing Kenya's commitment to regional stability and peace in South Sudan.
[Paragraph 7]
Chief mediator Lazarus Sumbeiywo exuded confidence in resolving outstanding issues. He said, "Following this launch, we plan to engage in sustained mediation to ensure a timely and comprehensive resolution of the issues, contingent on the parties' cooperation."
[Paragraph 8]
Despite the 2018 peace agreement, South Sudan remains fragile, with its implementation yet to be fully realized. The country anticipates holding elections in December, but crucial matters, such as a unified security force, remain unresolved.
[Paragraph 9]
Opposition groups have urged a swift implementation of the agreement to facilitate free and fair elections. The mediation talks aim to address these concerns and pave the way for a more stable and prosperous South Sudan.
[Paragraph 10]
The international community has expressed hope that these high-level talks will bring about lasting peace and reconciliation in South Sudan, allowing the country to harness its full potential and contribute to regional development.
