Harvard law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz criticized the guilty verdict in New York's case against former President Trump, calling it "the worst legal verdict [he's] seen in 60 years of practicing, writing, litigating [inaudible] cases."
Harvard law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz has unequivocally condemned the guilty verdict in New York's case against former President Trump, labeling it an unprecedented abuse of the justice system. Dershowitz, who was part of Trump's impeachment defense team in 2019, expressed his bewilderment over the verdict's vagueness and criticized the prosecution's motives.
In an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, Dershowitz questioned the very nature of the crimes for which Trump was convicted. "I still don’t know what he was convicted of," he said. "Was he convicted of intent to cheat on his taxes two years later, although he didn’t take it as a deduction? Was he convicted of defrauding voters, who obviously knew that he was a sexual scoundrel?"
Dershowitz argued that the prosecution's actions were motivated by political bias rather than a genuine pursuit of justice. "I have never seen a case where, even after the verdict came down, we don’t know what he was convicted of," he said. "No one in history — in history — has ever been convicted of failing to disclose hush money payments paid to somebody."
"Why would anybody pay hush money if they had to disclose it?" he asked. "This is a case where the prosecutor simply decided to get Trump."
Dershowitz's criticism echoes the sentiments expressed by other legal pundits. Elie Honig, CNN senior legal analyst, called the case "an ill-conceived, unjustified mess" in a New York Magazine column. Jonathan Turley, legal scholar and Fox News contributor, described the trial and conviction as "an abuse" of the justice system.
Despite his criticism, Dershowitz emphasized that his views are not driven by any pro-Trump bias. "I am not a Trump supporter. I voted against him," he said. "I’m a liberal Democrat, but I care more about the weaponization of the criminal justice system."
The Trump hush money trial has sparked heated debates and raised concerns about the potential dangers of politicizing criminal prosecutions. Dershowitz's strong condemnation of the verdict adds fuel to these discussions and highlights the importance of upholding the rule of law and fairness in the justice system.
