Amidst a legal storm involving involuntary manslaughter charges, Alec Baldwin found himself embroiled in a heated altercation with an anti-Israel demonstrator. Inside a coffee shop, the agitator repeatedly urged Baldwin to voice support for "Free Palestine," prompting the actor to swipe the demonstrator's phone.
While the phone incident garnered attention, Baldwin faces the more pressing matter of his involuntary manslaughter charges stemming from the fatal "Rust" movie set shooting. His legal team argued against the charges during a virtual hearing on Friday, but a ruling is expected next week.
One contentious issue during the hearing was whether prosecutors had contacted witnesses scheduled to appear before the grand jury. Baldwin's attorneys alleged that the prosecution failed to properly inform witnesses, while the prosecutor maintained her obligations and denied any wrongdoing.
The prosecution fired back at Baldwin's legal team, accusing them of lying and manipulating the facts. The prosecutor highlighted the "near countless" instances of deception from the defense, including personal attacks on the prosecution.
Court documents have emerged revealing Baldwin's alleged emotional outbursts and inattentiveness during firearms training on the "Rust" set. Prosecutors accused him of not being in control of his emotions and affecting the safety of the set.
Despite the ongoing legal challenges, Baldwin is scheduled to stand trial in July. Jury selection is set to begin on July 9, and the trial is expected to conclude by July 19.
Baldwin has filed three motions to dismiss his involuntary manslaughter charge, alleging unethical conduct by the prosecution and the FBI's mishandling of the gun in forensic testing. The prosecution has responded by calling out Baldwin's legal team for dishonesty and manipulation.
Defense attorneys have argued that the FBI tampered with the gun during testing, rendering it inoperable. This allegation could potentially impact the outcome of the case.
Baldwin's original motion to dismiss focused on the prosecution's alleged failure to present crucial evidence to the grand jury. His subsequent motions further elaborated on these claims, asserting the prosecution's misconduct and the FBI's tampering with the gun.
Court documents have raised questions about Baldwin's conduct on the "Rust" set, alleging that his outbursts and inattention contributed to safety concerns. His emotional state and lack of focus during firearms training are being scrutinized.
The anti-Israel demonstrator who confronted Baldwin was identified as a frequent agitator. His persistence in demanding Baldwin's public support for Palestine ignited the heated altercation that resulted in the phone swiping incident.
