Alec Baldwin's decision to start a reality show while facing involuntary manslaughter charges has sparked criticism from experts. The trial, which could result in up to 18 months of imprisonment for the actor, has raised concerns about the impact of his extracurricular activities on his public image. Legal analysts and PR specialists argue that Baldwin's actions could be seen as insensitive and distracting from the gravity of the proceedings.
Amid the ongoing involuntary manslaughter trial for the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Western movie "Rust," Alec Baldwin's decision to embark on a new reality show has raised eyebrows. The project has been met with criticism from industry experts, who argue that it could be a damaging public relations move.

Defense attorney Timothy Parlatore believes the reality show is a "terrible PR blunder." He emphasizes that Baldwin should be solely focused on the trial, which is expected to conclude in less than two weeks. "There is no need to go and do these things before a trial in a way that can negatively impact you," Parlatore said.
Baldwin's wife, Hilaria, has been a prominent presence at his trial, often attracting attention with her social media activities. Industry analysts note that the couple's public appearances, such as shopping at upscale boutiques, seem oblivious to the seriousness of the proceedings.

"Their social media accounts have been a stream of self-absorbed posts about how they are the ultimate victims, and they seem oblivious to how tone-deaf their continued self-promotion is," said Ebony Lewkovitz, founder of Eden Communications. "The Baldwins need to face this trial with the seriousness it deserves."
Attorney Gloria Allred, representing Hutchins' family, questioned the timing of Baldwin's reality show announcement, suggesting it could be a calculated attempt to gain sympathy from the jury or jury pool. She criticized the couple for not reaching out to Hutchins' family after the shooting but having time for public outings.

"Is he taking it seriously?" Allred asked. "Or is he doing it because of the reality show? I don’t know. But if he is, then it is in such bad taste."
Baldwin's legal team maintains that he was led to believe the gun was safe and that he did not have the responsibility to check it beforehand. However, prosecutors argue that under New Mexico law, Baldwin was ultimately responsible for the firearm's safety.
Public relations maven Juda Engelmayer believes Baldwin's reality show announcement and carefree outings project an arrogance that could damage his reputation. "Given the weight of what he’s looking at, whether he's guilty or not, he should be somber," Engelmayer said. "He should look like he cares. He should look like he’s respecting the family of the woman who was killed."
The reality show, which will document the Baldwins' family life, has reportedly been in the works for some time. Producers are reportedly prepared for contingencies, including Baldwin's potential incarceration, according to the New York Post. Baldwin's defense attorneys argue that the reality show is unrelated to the trial.
However, industry experts emphasized that Baldwin's actions could negatively impact his public image. "The Baldwins need to face this trial with the seriousness it deserves," Lewkovitz said.
