Former U.S. National Team defender and FOX Sports analyst Alexi Lalas has indicated his willingness to consider coaching the national team if asked by the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF).

Amidst the ongoing search for a new head coach for the United States men's national soccer team (USMNT), former player and current FOX Sports analyst Alexi Lalas has expressed his interest in the position.

Lalas, who played for the USMNT in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, made his sentiments known on social media, stating that he would "absolutely" submit his candidacy if approached by the USSF. He even went so far as to say he would coach "for free."

In an interview on the "The Herd" podcast, Lalas elaborated on his stance, emphasizing his sense of responsibility and confidence in his ability to lead the team. He expressed his belief that he could make a significant contribution to the team's development.

Despite his lack of direct coaching experience, Lalas has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the soccer world. As a player, he spent time in Serie A with Padova and in MLS with various teams, including the New England Revolution and Los Angeles Galaxy.

After retiring from playing, Lalas served as president/general manager of the San Jose Earthquakes, general manager of the MetroStars/New York Red Bulls, and president of the LA Galaxy. During his tenure with the Galaxy, he played a key role in signing English soccer legend David Beckham.

The USSF is currently conducting a comprehensive search for a new coach, with a focus on candidates with European soccer experience. However, Lalas's willingness to serve could be a compelling factor for the federation to consider.

Under former coach Gregg Berhalter, the USMNT achieved a record of 44-17-13, including a return to the FIFA Men's World Cup in 2022 and qualification for the knockout stage. However, the team's recent disappointing performance at the Copa América, where it failed to advance from the group stage, led to Berhalter's dismissal.

The 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is seen as a pivotal moment for the USMNT. Lalas, who was a member of the last U.S. team to play in a World Cup on home soil in 1994, could provide invaluable experience and leadership.

Whether or not Lalas ultimately becomes the next coach of the USMNT remains to be seen. However, his public expression of interest has certainly opened the door for the USSF to consider him as a potential candidate.
