New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara's absence from the team's final minicamp practice raised eyebrows, with reports suggesting the move was contract-related.
Alvin Kamara, the New Orleans Saints' dynamic running back, is entering the fourth year of his five-year, $75 million contract. However, the 28-year-old Pro Bowler is reportedly seeking a new deal before taking the field again.
Despite Kamara's impressive individual production, the Saints' offense has struggled to score consistently in recent seasons. The team's point total has declined from 458 in 2020 to just 337 in 2022.
Despite the team's offensive woes, Kamara has remained a bright spot. Over the past three seasons, he has averaged an impressive 1,032 rushing yards and 578 receiving yards per 17 games.
As Kamara approaches his eighth NFL season, he is seeking long-term security. The remaining $36.8 million on his current contract expires after the 2024 season, raising the possibility that the Saints could release him after that year.
According to Kamara's agent, negotiations between the running back and the Saints have been ongoing for "months," but progress has been elusive.
The Saints have maintained a positive stance, acknowledging Kamara's value but also expressing caution due to his age and the team's recent offensive struggles.
Kamara's absence from minicamp practice on June 13 sparked speculation that contract negotiations had reached an impasse. Head coach Dennis Allen confirmed that Kamara was present for a walk-through session but left early, citing an unknown reason.
According to Spotrac, Kamara is scheduled to earn $11.8 million in 2023, with a remaining $25 million in the final year of his contract.
The situation remains fluid, with several potential outcomes. Kamara could hold out for a new contract, forcing the Saints to negotiate or consider releasing him. Alternatively, the Saints could offer a revised deal, or they could decide to keep Kamara on his current contract and evaluate his performance in 2023.
Alvin Kamara's contract situation has become the latest subplot in the ongoing saga of the New Orleans Saints. The team's offense faces challenges, and Kamara's desire for long-term security could impact the franchise's future. Negotiations are ongoing, and the outcome will shape the Saints' outlook for the upcoming season and beyond.
