Sunny Choi, who left a lucrative marketing job to pursue her Olympic breaking dream, was eliminated from quarterfinal contention, leaving Paris empty-handed. Despite a victory in the round-robin, her third-place finish in her group was not enough to secure a spot in the knockout stage.
Sunny Choi's Olympic journey has come to an abrupt end, leaving her with a bittersweet mix of emotions. The American breaker, who made history as part of the United States' first-ever Olympic breaking team, was eliminated from quarterfinal contention even before her third battle.
Choi finished her Olympic run with a victory, defeating Portugal's Vanessa 2-0 in the round-robin. However, it was not enough to earn her a spot in the knockout stage. She ranked third in her respective group but needed a top-two finish.

The outcome marks the end of a dream that Choi had worked towards with unwavering determination. She quit her well-paying job as a marketing executive for the second-largest cosmetics company in the world to pursue her Olympic aspirations.
"I literally worked my whole entire life to have that financial stability, and then to give it up for this dream that may or may not happen was really, really scary," Choi told reporters at the USOPC media summit in April 2024.

The sacrifices Choi made were not limited to financial stability. "I want to have kids at some point, and I'm 35 now. So, it's like, 'Am I willing to wait several more years?'" she said. "There was a lot of things I just wanted to check off, and the Olympics just threw my plans out the window."
Quitting her job was not merely a pivot towards Paris; it was a complete career shift. Choi intended to open her own dance studio in Queens, New York, after the Games. She had no plans to return to marketing...unless she had to.

"If I do, it means something went wrong with the dancing career," Choi said. "I do still plan to dance, but I really want to shift gears and give feedback and teach the next generation the things that I've learned along the journey."
A medal in Paris could have significantly boosted her chances of achieving that goal and ensuring a lucrative dancing career. Unlike a corporate salary, Choi's income from breaking heavily relies on the visibility of her personal brand, a lesson she learned the hard way during her training for Paris.
Choi used savings from her marketing job to fund her Olympic ambitions. She was able to save money by training at public community centers. However, she did reach a point where her funds were dwindling and she had to consider lifestyle sacrifices. Fortunately, around that time, she secured sponsorships with Nike and Samsung, providing financial support for her dream.
While she will not leave Paris with the publicity and accolades that come with an Olympic medal, Choi still possesses valuable business skills and experience from her corporate career. "I myself am just lucky that I did work in corporate, and I do have background knowledge in marketing, project management and operations, so that will help me in the long run," she said.
Choi's Olympic journey may not have ended as she hoped, but she leaves Paris with a wealth of experience and the knowledge that she pursued her dream with unwavering determination. The future may hold another Olympic opportunity in 2032, but regardless of her competitive path, Choi's story serves as an inspiration to those who dare to chase their passions, no matter the sacrifices or uncertainties that lie ahead.
