Before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's address to Congress, families of U.S. citizens held hostage by Hamas in Gaza express desperate hope for a deal, fearing that further delay could prove fatal.

With Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu preparing to address Congress on Wednesday, the families of U.S. citizens held hostage by Hamas in Gaza for nearly 300 days are desperately hoping that he will use this high-profile platform to finally announce a cease-fire deal that will secure their release.

Ahead of Netanyahu's departure for Washington, D.C., his office released a statement indicating that Israel would return to the negotiating table this week in the hopes of reaching an agreement with Hamas, a U.S.-designated terror group, to exchange hostages for a cease-fire in the nine-month-old conflict.

Eight U.S. citizens have been detained by Hamas since October 7, when hundreds of its elite Nukhba terrorists infiltrated southern Israel, launching brutal attacks on military bases, civilian communities, and a massive music festival near the border. Approximately 1,200 people, mainly civilians, were killed in the attacks, with an estimated 250 taken captive by Hamas.

Despite a weeklong cease-fire in November that secured the release of over 100 hostages, around 120 individuals remain in captivity, including eight Americans: 23-year-old Hersch Goldberg-Polin, who moved to Israel with his family from California and was abducted from the Nova Music Festival; 35-year-old Sagui Dekel-Chen, who grew up in New Jersey; and 64-year-old Keith Siegel from North Carolina, who were both taken from their homes in kibbutz communities near the Gaza border. 19-year-old Eden Alexander from Tenafly, New Jersey, and Omer Neutra from Long Island, New York, both serving in the Israel Defense Forces, were captured from their military bases.

In April, Hamas released video recordings of both Goldberg-Polin, who reportedly lost an arm in the October 7 attack, and Keith Siegel, giving their families hope that they are still alive despite their prolonged captivity.

Tragically, three other U.S. citizens – Judy Weinstein, her husband Gad Haggai, and 19-year-old Itay Chen – are believed to have been killed while in Hamas custody, with their bodies still being held by the terrorists. The Israeli military has also declared 44 other hostages deceased.

Last week, Ronen and Orna Neutra, the parents of hostage Omer Neutra, addressed the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, urging U.S. and Israeli leaders to act immediately to secure the release of all hostages.

According to a statement released after the meeting, Netanyahu agreed to meet with representatives of the eight families shortly after arriving in Washington. The families stressed that their loved ones' lives were at stake and pleaded with the Prime Minister to finalize a deal without further delay.

During his meeting with families, Netanyahu reportedly expressed his determination to see the hostages returned and acknowledged that the conditions for their release were becoming favorable due to the pressure being exerted on Hamas.

The Prime Minister's address to Congress is seen as a potential opportunity to generate widespread support for the release of the hostages, both among American lawmakers and the general public.
