The release of the three Americans is a significant diplomatic victory for the Biden administration, which has faced criticism for its handling of the negotiations. The swap was reportedly brokered by Saudi Arabia, with the US agreeing to release Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer serving a 25-year prison sentence in the US.
Gershkovich, who was arrested in 2016 on charges of espionage, expressed his immense gratitude upon his return. "It's an extraordinary feeling to be back on American soil," he said. "I am so grateful to the Biden administration and to all those who worked tirelessly to secure my release."

Whelan, who was arrested in 2018 on charges of espionage, also thanked those involved in his release. "I am incredibly relieved to be free," he said. "I am eager to see my family and friends and to resume my life in the US."
Reed, who was arrested in 2019 on charges of assaulting a police officer, expressed his joy at being reunited with his loved ones. "It's amazing to be back home," he said. "I am so grateful for the support I have received from my family, friends, and the US government."

The release of the three Americans is a welcome development in US-Russia relations, which have been strained in recent years. The Biden administration has pledged to continue working to secure the release of other Americans detained in Russia, including Brittney Griner, a basketball star who was arrested in February on drug charges.
