An extraordinary discovery has been unearthed in the canonical gardens of Frombork, Poland: an ancient compass dating back to the 15th or 16th century. The rare find has captivated experts, who believe it may have belonged to the renowned astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus.
The compass, made of copper, resembles a wishbone with two prongs extending into the shape of a letter V. The discovery was announced by Warminska Grupa Eksploracyjna, the group responsible for the find, in a Facebook post on August 4, 2024.

"Today we are very successful," the group stated in a translated Facebook statement. They also shared that they had located underground tunnels where they stumbled upon the ancient relic.
According to the archeology group's Facebook post, this is only the third compass of its kind to be found in Poland. After its discovery, the artifact was entrusted to Detekt Archaeological Services, which confirmed its age.

The compass is believed to have a possible connection to Nicolaus Copernicus, the Polish astronomer and mathematician. This theory stems from the fact that it was found in Frombork, in the very gardens where Copernicus resided.
"We discovered an ancient compass that probably belonged to Nicolaus Copernicus," wrote the Misja Skarb Foundation, another group involved in the find, on a translated webpage dedicated to raising funds for archaeological research. "This tool could have been used by an astronomer to perform precise measurements and calculations crucial to his astronomical research. This find is of great historical importance because the compass is one of the few direct evidence of Copernicus' practical application of science."

Nicolaus Copernicus was a prominent figure in astronomy, particularly known for his heliocentric theory. He was the first European scientist to suggest that the Earth and other planets revolve around the sun. This theory, which contradicted the prevailing belief of a geocentric universe, laid the foundation for future astronomers.
Copernicus' theory was outlined in his book, "On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres," which he completed in 1532. It wasn't until 1543 that the work was published, the same year Copernicus passed away in Frombork.

The discovery of this potential Copernicus compass has stirred great excitement among historians and astronomers. It has been relocated to the Nicolaus Copernicus Museum, which already houses a similar artifact. This discovery provides valuable insight into the life and work of Copernicus, shedding light on his groundbreaking contributions to astronomy.
Furthermore, the exploration of Frombork's underground tunnels has the potential to uncover additional hidden treasures, offering a glimpse into the past and enhancing our understanding of this iconic figure. The ongoing research and discoveries in this field continue to enrich our knowledge of the history of science and the legacy of Nicolaus Copernicus.
