An anti-Islam activist has been stabbed in Germany, suffering injuries to his face and leg. The attack was caught on camera and police shot the assailant, who also injured a police officer.
Anti-Islam activist Michael Stürzenberger was stabbed multiple times in the face and leg on Friday in Mannheim, Germany, according to the German far-right organization Buergerbewegung Pax Europa, which captured the attack on video.
Stürzenberger is a member of Buergerbewegung Pax Europa, which advocates for a ban on mosques in Germany. The organization released a statement saying that Stürzenberger was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
In addition to Stürzenberger, a police officer was also stabbed in the back and neck by the attacker, who was shot by responding officers. The attacker reportedly survived the shooting.
A banner with the message "Stop political Islam!" was displayed at the scene of the attack.
Police said that there was no longer any danger to the public and that the investigation into the motive for the attack was ongoing.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said that the investigation would determine if the attack had an Islamist motive. She warned of the "great danger from Islamist acts of violence."
Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the attack, saying that "violence is absolutely unacceptable in our democracy."
The stabbing occurred on the Marktplatz, a square in Mannheim's downtown area. The city of about 300,000 people is located south of Frankfurt.
