Protesters gathered in the Cannon Rotunda of the Capitol building on Tuesday afternoon to denounce the Israeli government and its ongoing conflict with the terrorist group Hamas in Gaza. Some protesters were apprehended by law enforcement during the demonstration. Despite widespread bipartisan support in the U.S. for Israel's fight against Hamas, there have been growing concerns among some, particularly within the Democratic party, regarding the humanitarian toll on the people of Gaza.

Anti-Israel protesters were arrested Tuesday afternoon in the Cannon Rotunda of the Capitol building after demonstrating against the Israeli government and its ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. The arrests occurred as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepared to address a joint session of Congress on Wednesday amidst the escalating conflict.

The war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israeli civilians, killing over 1,300 and seizing hundreds of hostages in Gaza. In response, Israel has launched military strikes against Hamas targets, resulting in significant casualties and infrastructure damage in Gaza.

The United States has expressed support for Israel's fight against Hamas, providing $15 billion in military aid as part of a $95 billion foreign aid package approved in April. However, support for the Israeli government has dwindled among some Democrats, particularly regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Prior to his departure for the U.S., Netanyahu emphasized the importance of maintaining bipartisan support for Israel in Washington, despite political uncertainties. He became the first world leader to address a joint congressional session four times.

However, several prominent politicians, including Vice President Kamala Harris, Senators Bernie Sanders, Dick Durbin, and Elizabeth Warren, and Representatives Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, boycotted the address, citing concerns about the human cost of the conflict. Additionally, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Harris declined to preside over the joint session, citing a scheduling conflict.

Vice President Harris' absence and Senator Patty Murray's refusal to preside created a protocol issue, requiring Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Ben Cardin to preside over the session.

During his visit to Washington, Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with President Biden, Vice President Harris, and former President Trump. His meeting with Trump will take place at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

The protests in the Capitol building reflect the growing polarization within the U.S. regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While some support Israel's right to self-defense, others condemn its military actions and call for an end to the violence.
