Hundreds of protesters wearing red shirts and chanting slogans gathered in the Cannon Rotunda, prompting the arrest of approximately 200 individuals.

A swarm of anti-Israel demonstrators descended upon the Cannon Rotunda in the Cannon House Office Building, disrupting the proceedings and leading to the arrest of approximately 200 individuals. The protesters, predominantly Jewish and donning red shirts, were caught on video engaging in loud chanting and clapping while fellow demonstrators were apprehended by police officers.

The nature of the protest suggested an affiliation with a Jewish group, evidenced by the presence of protesters wearing kippahs and shirts with slogans such as "Jews Say Stop Arming Israel" and "Not in Our Name."

The protests caused significant disruption, prompting staff and interns in the office of Congressman Dan Kildee to barricade themselves in their offices due to violent pounding on their doors by the demonstrators.

Rep. Kildee's chief of staff released a statement condemning the violent behavior of the protesters, who attempted to force entry into the office. The statement expressed relief that Rep. Kildee and his staff were safe.

In contrast to the office's description of the events, the United States Capitol Police classified the protest as involving "peaceful demonstrators." However, Capitol Police reported that the rotunda had been cleared by 4:30 p.m. with several arrests made.

The nature of the charges against the arrested protesters included obstructing, crowding, or incommoding.

The protest unfolded during the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington, D.C., where he planned to meet with President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Netanyahu's visit also coincided with a joint session of Congress, which Vice President Harris declined to preside over, citing her presidential campaign. Senate President pro tempore Patty Murray initially expected to preside but subsequently boycotted the event, leaving Sen. Ben Cardin to preside over the address.

Netanyahu's meeting with Biden is scheduled to occur days after Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race. Netanyahu expressed Israel's unwavering support for the U.S. regardless of who is elected president, emphasizing the importance of solidarity during uncertain times.
