Argentina and Spain, winners of the Copa América 2024 and Euro 2024 respectively, will square off in next year's Finalissima, a competition that pits the best teams from UEFA and CONMEBOL against each other.
The 2025 Finalissima, a clash between the Copa América 2024 champions Argentina and the Euro 2024 winners Spain, has been confirmed for next year, continuing the tradition of pitting the best teams from Europe and South America against each other.
The first-ever Finalissima, also known as the "grand final," was held in 2022, with Argentina prevailing 3-0 over Italy at Wembley Stadium. The concept of a showdown between UEFA and CONMEBOL elite teams, however, dates back to 1985.
Argentina, under the leadership of Lionel Messi, is expected to make another appearance at the next Finalissima. The legendary forward could face off against Spain, who will be spearheaded by rising star Lamine Yamal, who has expressed his admiration for Messi.
"I hope Messi wins the Copa América and I win the Euros, so I can play against him in the Finalissima," Yamal said in an interview with RAC1.
The 2022 Finalissima was played on June 1, so the upcoming edition is likely to take place during the summer of 2025. There are no major European or South American competitions scheduled outside of FIFA World Cup qualifying until the World Cup itself in 2026, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The Finalissima will present Argentina with their first significant challenge since Ángel Di María's retirement from international football. The 36-year-old forward announced that the Copa América 2024 would be his final tournament with the national team.
The Finalissima has quickly become a prestigious event on the international football calendar, providing an opportunity for the top teams from two continents to compete for a major trophy. The upcoming clash between Argentina and Spain promises to be an exciting and highly anticipated affair.
