The FBI is seeking additional tips and information as the investigation continues following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
Former President Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt on Saturday at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The suspected shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by Secret Service agents moments after opening fire.
Trump was speaking to supporters when shots rang out a few minutes into his speech. The former president was seen clutching his ear after gunshots were heard. Secret Service agents immediately swarmed Trump and helped him from the ground.

Trump was left largely unharmed, but one spectator, 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, died in the shooting. Two others, David Dutch and James Copenhaver, were injured but were listed in stable condition.
Crooks fired from an elevated position outside the security perimeter of the rally. Rallygoers reported seeing him climbing to the roof of a nearby building and warned local police.

The FBI has collected the weapon used in the shooting, an AR-Style rifle, and Crooks' cellphone. They are working to gain access to the device.
Authorities believe the rifle used by Crooks was purchased legally by his father several months ago. It is not yet clear how Crooks gained access to the weapon.

An explosive device was found in Crooks' car, which was taken to the FBI in Quantico, Virginia. Bomb-making materials were also found inside his home.
Investigators are trying to determine a motive for the shooting. Crooks was a registered Republican, but he only participated in the Nov. 8, 2022, state election.

Records show that he made a $15 donation to Progressive Turnout Project, a Chicago-based political action committee that supports Democrat candidates for public office.
President Biden spoke with Trump after the shooting and directed the Secret Service to provide the former president with "every resource capability and protective measure necessary to ensure his continued safety."

The Secret Service said no changes were being made to the security plan for the Republican National Convention.
The investigation into the assassination attempt is ongoing. The FBI is urging anyone with information to contact their local FBI office or the FBI's tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324).
