Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief, lost his life shielding his family from a hail of bullets at a Donald Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The Secret Service's apparent lack of accountability and a series of security missteps have raised questions about the adequacy of the safety plan.
A lone bicycle, abandoned in the shade of a tree near a Pennsylvania manufacturing facility, serves as a haunting reminder of a gunman's hail of gunfire that nearly assassinated a former president. The would-be assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks, allegedly rode the bicycle to Donald Trump's rally in Butler, ditching it before opening fire from a rooftop about 150 yards away.

Crooks' suspicious movements were noticed by an attendee at 5:30 p.m., 42 minutes before the shooting, according to The New York Post. A witness also spotted him with a rangefinder, and reports were made to police. However, security lapses prevented law enforcement from apprehending Crooks before it was too late.
A "flying squad," a mobile response team tasked with surveillance and pursuing suspicious activities, could have potentially intercepted Crooks, according to Paul Mauro, a retired NYPD inspector. Such a team would have been essential in guarding against diversions and ensuring the safety of the former president.

At 5:52 p.m., the Secret Service spotted Crooks on the roof, but it was not until 6:12 p.m. that he opened fire on the crowd. One bullet grazed Trump's ear, potentially being fatal if he had not moved his head at that moment. Corey Comperatore, a beloved former fire chief, died while shielding his family from the bullets, while two others were seriously wounded.
Crooks was ultimately shot dead after a nearly 30-second-long exchange of gunfire. The incident has prompted questions about how he was able to slip through the cracks and fire multiple rounds into the crowd.

Congress members have expressed concerns about apparent lapses in planning and execution of the safety plan. The Butler Township police have referred questions to the FBI, Secret Service, and Pennsylvania State Police, but all three agencies have declined to comment.
The silence from law enforcement has only added to the unanswered questions surrounding the assassination attempt. The discovery of explosive materials in Crooks' white van further complicates the investigation.

Security experts have criticized the lack of accountability within the Secret Service and the overall response to the incident. The Butler Farm Show, where the rally took place, has been the subject of an extensive search for explosives by law enforcement.
As the investigation into the assassination attempt continues, it is imperative that all aspects of the incident are thoroughly examined to prevent such a tragedy from occurring again. The safety and security of our former presidents and public figures must be paramount, and any failures in the protection system must be addressed and corrected.
