Miraculously, McKenzie was able to catch a wave that carried him back to the shore. Once on land, a retired police officer used his dog's leash to fashion a makeshift tourniquet around McKenzie's severed leg.
Paramedics rushed McKenzie to John Hunter Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. While his leg was never recovered, McKenzie's swift actions and the assistance of those around him saved his life.
