The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating an incident that occurred near Syracuse Hancock International Airport on Monday, where two planes appeared to come into dangerously close proximity during takeoff and landing procedures.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 11:50 a.m., involved a Delta Connection flight attempting to take off while an American Eagle flight was preparing to land on the same runway. A police dash camera captured the event, providing visual evidence of the close call.
According to the FAA, the air traffic controller instructed PSA Airlines Flight 5511, the American Eagle plane, to go around and abort its landing to maintain safe separation from the departing Delta Connection flight. The planes were estimated to be between 700 and 1,000 feet vertically apart but the exact horizontal distance between them remains unclear.
