Folarin Balogun's crucial strike propelled the United States men's national team to a 2-0 triumph over Bolivia in their Copa América group opener, solidifying their position at the top of Group C.
Folarin Balogun's astute finish in the 44th minute proved decisive as the United States men's national team (USMNT) secured a pivotal 2-0 victory over Bolivia in their Copa América group opener. Balogun's goal, his first for the national team since October 2021, propelled the USMNT to the top of Group C with three points.
Balogun's Goal Fires USMNT to Copa América Victory over Bolivia
Coach Gregg Berhalter's decision to reinstate Balogun to the starting lineup paid dividends as he rewarded the coach's faith with a crucial strike. The 22-year-old forward deftly converted a pass from Christian Pulisic with a left-footed shot, finding the back of the net to give the USMNT a crucial advantage heading into halftime.
Ricardo Pepi, who replaced Balogun in the second half, came close to extending the lead with a pair of point-blank chances saved by Bolivian goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra in the 90th minute. Despite his missed opportunities, Pepi's performance reignited the debate over who should start at the nine position for the United States in Copa América.
On "FOX Soccer Now," panelists Wes Morgan, Melissa Ortiz, and Jimmy Conrad unanimously agreed that Balogun's impressive display earned him the starting nod for the next game against Panama. Morgan praised Balogun's all-around game, highlighting his movement, threat to defenders, and his goal.
Ortiz echoed Morgan's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of Balogun's goal and suggesting that he deserves to start the next match based on his performance. While acknowledging the potential of Pepi and Josh Sargent, Ortiz believes Balogun's current form warrants his inclusion in the starting lineup.
Conrad, while agreeing that Balogun should start at the nine position, commended Pepi's effectiveness as a substitute. He noted Pepi's exceptional goals-to-minute ratio and his professional attitude in fulfilling his role off the bench.
Despite the consensus on Balogun's starting role for the Panama match, Ortiz proposed a potential switch for the Group C finale against Uruguay. She suggested Pepi could start in that match due to his defensive prowess in the striker role, which could prove valuable against a dynamic Uruguayan side.
The USMNT's victory over Bolivia was a positive start to their Copa América campaign. Balogun's goal and the team's overall performance have set the stage for a promising run in the tournament. As they move forward, the debate over the starting striker position will likely continue, with both Balogun and Pepi vying for the opportunity to lead the line for the United States.
