Bill Belichick's absence from the New England Patriots' war room this offseason hasn't prevented the veteran head coach from expressing his opinion on the team's draft selections. During an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" draft night special, Belichick sounded less than enthusiastic about the Patriots' decision to trade up for North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick.

Belichick seemingly cast doubt on the comparison Maye has drawn to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. "Drake compares himself a lot to Josh Allen, he's been doing that for quite a while – we'll see about that," Belichick said. "I think there are some similarities in terms of size and athleticism, but Josh Allen is a pretty special player now."

Despite acknowledging that the quarterback position was one of the Patriots' top needs in the first round, Belichick's tone suggested that Maye wasn't his preferred choice. "A very talented kid, good size, runs well, has a good arm – just, he hasn't played very much," Belichick said. "He really doesn't have a lot of experience."

Belichick emphasized the need for Maye to improve his understanding of defenses and coverages. "He's a kid that can make all the throws, he just needs to be more consistent," Belichick added.

Maye joins the Patriots at a time of transition, with a new offensive coordinator, Alex Van Pelt, leading the team's offense. In his two seasons at UNC, Maye showcased impressive passing stats, throwing for 7,929 yards with a 64.9% completion rate, 62 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. However, his limited experience remains a concern.

The Patriots' decision to select Maye has sparked mixed reactions among analysts and fans. Some believe that his potential as a dual-threat quarterback makes him a valuable asset, while others question his readiness for the NFL and the pressure of playing in a demanding market like New England.

Ultimately, it will be up to Maye to prove his worth and meet the expectations that come with being a top-three draft pick. Under Belichick's watchful eye and with the guidance of a new coaching staff, Maye will have the opportunity to develop his skills and contribute to the Patriots' success.
