"My fellow Americans, I want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics," Biden said. "Do remember, while we may disagree, we are not enemies. We’re neighbors, we’re friends, coworkers, citizens, and most importantly, we are fellow Americans. We must stand together."

Biden expressed gratitude that Trump is "doing well" and offered his condolences to the family of Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief who was fatally shot shielding his wife and daughters from the bullets.

The president linked the assassination attempt to a series of recent incidents of political violence, including the Capitol riot, the attack on former Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, and the kidnapping plot against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

"There is no place in America for this kind of violence or for any violence, ever, period. No exceptions," Biden emphasized.

He stressed that while disagreement is inherent in democracy, it should not lead to violence. "Politics must never be a literal battlefield," Biden said, "God forbid - a killing field."

The would-be assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was killed by a Secret Service sniper after firing multiple shots toward the stage where Trump was speaking.

"Tonight I want to speak to what we do know: A former president was shot. An American citizen killed simply exercising his freedom to support the candidate of his choosing," Biden continued. "We cannot, we must not, go down this road in America."

Biden urged Americans to resolve their differences through the ballot box and called for an end to political polarization.

"We are a nation that has always stood up for what is right," Biden said. "And we will not let violence, we will not let hate, and we will not let division prevail."

Biden's address was met with mixed reactions, with some praising his call for unity and others criticizing his handling of political extremism. However, the incident has raised concerns about the safety of political candidates and the potential for further violence in the lead-up to the upcoming election.
