White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that President Biden believes in the essential role of democracy for economic prosperity and security, and that the blatant electoral fraud in Venezuela must be condemned.

U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen has imposed sanctions on 16 officials close to Maduro, including Venezuelan intelligence chief Remigio Ceballos Ichaso and defense minister Vladimir Padrino López. These individuals have been accused of undermining the electoral process and engaging in acts of repression.

Additionally, the U.S. has imposed visa restrictions on a number of other allied officials who have played a role in electoral irregularities and human rights violations.

The Biden administration has taken a tough stance on Venezuela, imposing sanctions on over 140 current and former officials and restricting visas for approximately 2,000 individuals. However, critics argue that more needs to be done to address the root of the problem, namely Maduro's continued access to lucrative oil contracts.

Former U.N. Security Council diplomat Isaias Medina III contends that the administration's focus on sanctions alone is insufficient. He advocates for decisive actions such as issuing Interpol red notices, intercepting drug shipments, and blocking the movement of oil.

The sanctions come in response to Venezuela's controversial July 28 election, in which Maduro claimed victory. The main opposition coalition, Vente Venezuela, has accused Maduro of stealing the vote and has released records supporting their candidate's victory.

Opposition leaders Edmundo González and María Corina Machado have gone into hiding since the vote, while the Supreme Court has reasserted Maduro's victory, rejecting opposition claims of fraud.

The U.S., European Union, and several Latin American countries have rejected the Venezuelan high court's certification of Maduro's victory. Maduro's government has refused to release official tally sheets from the election.

Maduro's claim of victory has sparked protests across Venezuela, leading to violent repression by security forces. Over 2,000 demonstrators have been apprehended and sent to torture camps.

Earlier this month, the U.S. seized a plane owned by Maduro in the Dominican Republic. The plane, valued at $13 million, was purchased through a straw company in violation of sanctions laws and export controls.

The seizure was a joint investigation between Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Department of Commerce. The plane is now in U.S. custody.

The sanctions against Maduro and his associates are based on Executive Order 13884, which prohibits U.S. persons from engaging in transactions with individuals acting on behalf of the Maduro regime.

The U.S. has also imposed export controls on items intended for military or military-intelligence use in Venezuela.

The Biden administration is collaborating with international partners to address the crisis in Venezuela. The U.S., Brazil, and other nations have proposed a new election in Venezuela, despite rejections from the government and opposition.
