Amidst a surge in political violence, President Biden and members of his Cabinet strongly denounced the assassination attempt on former President Trump over the weekend, extending condolences and prayers to victims and condemning the use of violence in the political arena.

Amid a heated election season marked by inflammatory rhetoric, President Biden and his Cabinet unequivocally condemned the attempted assassination of former President Trump, expressing sympathy and condolences for the victims and their families.

Vice President Harris promptly tweeted that "assassination attempts have no place in our nation," adding that she and her husband were praying for the family of the deceased victim, identified as former fire chief Corey Comperatore.

Following suit, Secretary of State Antony Blinken declared his "shock and sadness," expressing gratitude for Trump's safety and emphasizing that political violence is unacceptable in America. Similarly, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated that the entire Department of Defense condemns "this violence, which has absolutely no place in our democracy."

Attorney General Merrick Garland, who faced scrutiny from House Republicans this year, issued a lengthy statement offering condolences and thanking law enforcement officers for their swift response. He stressed that the assassination attempt was an attack on democracy itself and that the Justice Department will not tolerate such violence.

Other Cabinet members extending sympathies include Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, Secretary of Veteran Affairs Denis McDonough, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield, and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.

These statements come on the eve of the Republican National Convention scheduled to commence in Milwaukee, where delegates will officially nominate Trump as the presumptive GOP presidential candidate. Biden has instructed the Secret Service to thoroughly examine the convention's security measures, while the agency has affirmed that its current protocol will remain in place throughout the event.
