The Biden campaign erupted into cheers Thursday after a New York jury found former President Donald Trump guilty on all counts of falsifying business records.
The Biden campaign headquarters in Wilmington erupted into cheers Thursday evening as news of former President Donald Trump's guilty verdict reverberated through the political landscape. Biden campaign staffers rejoiced as the jury concluded Trump's historic criminal trial, finding him culpable on all 34 charges.
ABC White House correspondent Mary Bruce reported the jubilant atmosphere within the campaign headquarters moments after the verdict announcement: "Our team has heard that there were cheers inside the Biden headquarters in Wilmington as the verdict was read." This unanimous guilty verdict marked a significant victory for the Biden campaign, which had been monitoring the trial closely.
In a prompt response, the Biden campaign issued a statement emphasizing the verdict's implications: "The threat Trump poses to our democracy has never been greater." Communications director Michael Tyler stressed that while Trump's conviction does not eliminate the threat he poses, it highlights the need for his defeat at the ballot box.
Tyler warned that Trump's unhinged campaign, fueled by revenge and retribution, poses a grave danger to American freedoms and political stability. He argued that a second Trump term would plunge the nation into chaos and erode its democratic principles, which the American people will reject in the upcoming election.
Trump, however, dismissed the verdict as "disgraceful" and alleged that the trial was rigged. He declared that the "real verdict" would come from the people on November 5th, referring to his upcoming presidential rematch with Biden.
Bruce noted that Biden has been cautious in commenting on the trial, but that this verdict may prompt a shift in his campaign strategy. While the guilty verdicts provide a political advantage for Democrats, Biden is expected to avoid appearing overly celebratory to dispel claims of a political witch hunt.
Instead, Biden is likely to maintain his argument that Trump is unfit to serve and emphasize the voters' ultimate decision in determining Trump's future. Despite the possibility of prison time for Trump, the Biden campaign believes that voters will ultimately decide his political destiny.
The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but Fox News' Paul Steinhauser contributed to this report. This verdict has injected a significant new element into the 2024 presidential race, with the Biden campaign seizing the opportunity to further delegitimize Trump's candidacy and rally support against his return to power.
