Amid waning poll numbers and growing concerns within his own party, President Biden is facing mounting pressure to drop out of the 2024 presidential race. Top Democrats, including House Intelligence Committee Chairman Jim Himes and Rep. Scott Peters, have publicly called on Biden to step aside, citing the need to prevent a potential electoral defeat and preserve his legacy.

President Biden's decision to run for re-election in 2024 has come under increasing scrutiny and criticism from within his own party. Several high-profile Democrats have publicly urged him to withdraw from the race, citing growing concerns about his age, performance in recent public appearances, and the potential for a damaging electoral defeat.

In a statement, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Jim Himes (D-Conn.) praised Biden's long and distinguished career in public service and acknowledged his accomplishments as president. However, Himes expressed concern that Biden's continued participation in the race could put his legacy, the party's chances of victory, and American democracy at risk.

Himes pointed to the rising threat posed by former President Donald Trump, who has already announced his candidacy for 2024. He argued that Biden, at age 82, would be facing an uphill battle against a younger and more energetic opponent.

Additionally, Himes cited Biden's recent performance in the State of the Union address and other public appearances as evidence of his declining cognitive abilities. He worried that a diminished Biden would not be able to withstand the rigors of the campaign trail or the demands of the presidency.

Rep. Scott Peters (D-Calif.) echoed Himes' concerns, stating that the stakes for the 2024 election are too high for the Democrats to allow Biden to run. Peters asserted that the party is on a "losing course" and that Biden's continued candidacy would only exacerbate the situation.

Peters became the 16th Democratic House representative to publicly call on Biden to withdraw from the race. The growing chorus of opposition within his own party has raised serious doubts about Biden's viability as a candidate.

Despite the mounting pressure, Biden has repeatedly stated his intention to run for re-election. He has dismissed concerns about his age and health, asserting that he is fit to serve as president and confident in his ability to defeat Trump in the general election.

Biden also enjoys the support of key party leaders, including House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). Both Jeffries and Schumer have expressed confidence in Biden's leadership and his ability to win in 2024.

However, the increasing number of Democrats publicly calling on Biden to step aside is a clear indication of the deep concerns that many within the party hold about his ability to lead them to victory. The president's decision to run for re-election will ultimately depend on whether he believes he can overcome the challenges he faces and unite the Democratic Party behind his candidacy.
