ABC News' Jonathan Karl warns that President Biden's recent interview will not "calm the nerves" of "jittery Democrats" who are increasingly pushing him to bow out of the 2024 race amid worries over his age and mental acuity.
In a highly anticipated interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos, President Biden attempted to address concerns about his well-being following a disastrous debate performance last week. However, his answers sparked further unease among Democrats, who have been calling for him to step aside due to fears that his cognitive abilities are declining.
One of the most pressing questions raised during the interview was whether Biden had watched his debate performance. He initially appeared uncertain, stating that he did not believe he had, before acknowledging that he had a "bad night." Stephanopoulos pressed him on whether he realized how poorly he was performing during the debate, to which Biden admitted that he did, but blamed it on exhaustion and inadequate preparation.

Biden's explanation raised further concerns about his ability to handle the demands of the presidency, especially considering that he had spent several days in Camp David prior to the debate. When asked if he had taken a neurological test, Biden stated that he had not, although he claimed to receive a full neurological exam every day. He also declined to undergo an independent medical evaluation that included cognitive tests, saying that he had already "done it."
Stephanopoulos challenged Biden on his assertion that he has the mental and physical capacity to serve another four years, questioning whether he was fully aware of the toll that the job takes. Biden insisted that he was confident in his abilities, but his responses seemed unconvincing to many viewers.

The interview also touched on Biden's declining approval ratings and the growing number of Democrats who believe he should not seek re-election. Biden downplayed these concerns, claiming that he was not behind in the polls and that he remained the most qualified candidate to defeat Donald Trump. However, he admitted that losing the election would be a disappointment if he felt he had "given it [his] all."
Biden's interview has further fueled speculation about his political future. Democrats are facing a difficult decision: whether to support Biden, who they fear is too old and vulnerable to win in 2024, or to back a younger candidate who could provide a fresh start for the party. The next few months will be crucial in determining Biden's fate as he attempts to quell the growing doubts within his own party.
