Democratic Senator Joe Manchin calls on President Biden to drop out of the presidential race, highlighting health and well-being concerns as well as political challenges facing the Democratic party.
Independent Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia joined the growing chorus of Democrats expressing concern over President Biden's health and performance as the 2024 presidential election approaches. In a television interview, Manchin urged Biden to step aside and make way for a "new generation" to lead the country.
Manchin's call follows a series of setbacks for Biden, including a dismal performance in a recent debate against former President Donald Trump. The senator expressed concern over Biden's overall well-being and questioned his ability to handle the rigors of the campaign trail.

"It's concerning when you watch him," Manchin said. "I'm concerned about the president's health and well-being, I really am."
Manchin acknowledged that some Democrats facing competitive races in the upcoming midterm elections are apprehensive about Biden's re-election campaign potentially weighing down their chances of victory. With donor class also voicing concerns, Manchin emphasized the need for a "different direction."

The senator relayed that he had previously communicated his concerns privately to Biden's allies, including senators Chris Coons and Chuck Schumer. However, he decided to make his stance public after watching Biden's debate performance.
Despite his call for Biden to drop out, Manchin expressed confidence in the president's ability to complete his current term. "I think basically he can finish this job that he started and finish the way he wanted to lead," Manchin said.

Manchin's comments reflect a growing sentiment within the Democratic party regarding Biden's fitness for office. In recent weeks, several other Democratic lawmakers have raised concerns about Biden's age and cognitive abilities.
The president has faced scrutiny over his gaffes, verbal missteps, and occasional confusion during public appearances. Critics have argued that these incidents demonstrate a decline in mental sharpness and raise questions about his ability to handle the demands of the presidency.

Biden's supporters, however, maintain that he remains mentally sharp and committed to serving the country. They point to his accomplishments in office and his ability to connect with voters.
As the race for the White House heats up, the issue of Biden's health and fitness is likely to remain a major topic of debate. The Democratic party will need to carefully weigh the risks of fielding an aging candidate against the potential benefits of his experience and popularity.
