The House Oversight Committee is investigating Biden's threats to withhold aid from Israel over its potential invasion of Rafah. The investigation examines concerns about the decision-making process, the timing of the announcement, and the alleged withholding of information from the public.
The House Oversight Committee has launched an investigation into President Biden's alleged quid pro quo with Israel over its potential ground invasion of the Gaza city of Rafah. The committee is scrutinizing the Biden administration's decision to threaten withholding offensive aid if Israel proceeds with the invasion.
Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., sent a letter to National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, questioning the decision-making process and the timing of the announcement. Comer also requested a congressional briefing, documents, and communications related to discussions about pausing any aid to Israel.
The committee's concerns center on allegations that the Biden administration played "political games" with U.S. aid to Israel. Comer emphasized that the committee "seeks a briefing, as well as documents and information related to this decision, including any legal justification for withholding essential supplies from Israel in its fight against Hamas terrorists."
Biden made the announcement of his decision in a CNN interview on May 9, 2024. He pledged continued support for Israel's defensive systems, but stated that he would not provide offensive weapons for an invasion of Rafah.
The committee also raised concerns about the withholding of information from the public about the decision. Comer questioned why the National Security Council allegedly chose to withhold the information until after Biden's speech on Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Biden's decision has been met with criticism from some, including those who question why he would withhold military aid from a close ally. Biden had previously pledged support for Israel's military, stating in a 2019 interview that cutting off aid would be "absolutely preposterous."
The White House has defended the decision, arguing that Israel was aware of the warning about offensive aid before Biden's interview. National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby also emphasized that Biden would continue to provide Israel with defensive capabilities.
However, the House Oversight Committee remains concerned about the potential implications of Biden's actions. The committee argues that the administration's priorities appear to be "motivated by public perception, and not what is best for national security or diplomacy."
The committee has also been investigating the Biden administration's funding of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) due to concerns about potential links between its staffers and a Hamas terror attack in October 2023.
The investigation into Biden's alleged quid pro quo with Israel is ongoing, and it remains to be seen whether the committee's findings will have any impact on the impeachment efforts against the president.
