President Biden's apparent forgetfulness of his Defense Secretary's name has raised questions about his cognitive abilities, prompting mounting calls for him to step aside and allow a younger candidate to challenge former President Trump in November's election.
President Biden has faced a barrage of criticism for his handling of an interview with BET, where he seemingly forgot the name of his Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin. The incident has reignited concerns about Biden's cognitive abilities, with prominent Democrats calling for him to withdraw from the race.
Nicholas Kristof, a New York Times columnist, believes Biden's forgetfulness is a sign of cognitive decline and that he is "likely to lose" the election. He argues that the Democratic Party is making a mistake by not demanding that Biden step down.

"If the humblest household can manage this conversation," wrote Kristof, "so can Democratic leaders."
Biden's memory lapse comes amid a string of recent verbal miscues, further fueling concern about his fitness to serve. In a recent speech, he referred to the "prime minister of Iraq" instead of its president.

Behind the scenes, powerful Democrats like former President Obama and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi are reportedly pessimistic about Biden's chances. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., has publicly called for Biden to leave the race.
Kristof warns that if Trump is the fundamental threat, Democrats cannot afford to be loyal to a "losing candidate." He argues that Biden's cognitive decline is not just a matter of politics but also of national security.

"The issue is not just politics but also national security," wrote Kristof.
The liberal columnist notes that nobody knows the truth about Biden's cognitive abilities but that "it's reasonable to expect further deterioration" since "Biden's capacity appears to have diminished since 2020."
The Biden campaign has dismissed concerns about the President's cognitive health, stating that he is and will remain the Democratic nominee. However, the mounting pressure from within the party and from the public may force him to reconsider his candidacy.
In the wake of Biden's memory lapse, CNN analyst Van Jones conceded that a virus could stop Biden, even if a bullet could not stop Trump. Jones believes that Biden's performance in public appearances has "just affirmed what folks saw in that debate."
NBC's Chuck Todd declared "this candidacy is over," predicting that Biden is "about 10 days" from accepting reality.
The Democratic Party faces a difficult decision: whether to remain loyal to a candidate who may be cognitively unfit or to challenge him and risk a Trump victory.
