Gina Raimondo, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, has faced widespread criticism on social media after admitting to ABC News that she was not "familiar" with the downward revision of jobs created in the past year.
Gina Raimondo, the United States Secretary of Commerce and former governor of Rhode Island, has drawn the ire of social media users after acknowledging to ABC News on Wednesday that she was not "familiar" with the substantial downward revision of jobs created over the past year.
ABC News correspondent Kayna Whitworth questioned Raimondo about her views on the Bureau of Labor Statistics' revised jobs numbers. "I'm curious as to what you think of today's Bureau of Labor announcement that over 800,000 fewer jobs were actually created than originally reported," Whitworth said.

The journalist aired a snippet from former President Trump's Wednesday rally in North Carolina, in which he discussed the story. "The government inflated the numbers by an extra — get this — 818,000 jobs that don't exist," Trump said. "So they claimed they existed when they didn't. They built them up to boast about their fantastic work."
Raimondo dismissed the news, dismissing it as Trumpian misinformation and responding "no" when asked if the revision could be a hindrance to Democratic presidential nominee and Vice President Harris.

"No. When I hear that, first of all, I don't believe it because I've never heard Donald Trump say anything truthful," Raimondo said.
"It's from the Bureau of Labor," Whitworth said.

"I'm not familiar with that," Raimondo said, despite the report's publication hours earlier.
Raimondo then proceeded to tout Harris' "pro-business" economic agenda for the country. In recent days, the presidential candidate has faced criticism for suggesting what critics, including left-leaning ones, have labeled government price controls on businesses.
Social media users appeared incredulous that one of the government's top economic officials was unaware of the jobs report.
"This is the Secretary of Commerce," remarked Charles Cooke, a senior writer for National Review.
Katie Pavlich, a Fox News contributor, tweeted, "There's only so much you can fake or hide before things come crashing down. Biden's decline, cooking the books on the economy, redefining 'recession,' etc."
"Holy hell, we are governed by idiots," conservative commentator Ned Ryun stated.
"This is the Secretary of Commerce, btw," wrote Chaya Raichik, creator of Libs of TikTok.
Comedian Tim Young declared, "They think you're stupid."
The revelation highlights the Biden administration's ongoing struggle to communicate clearly and effectively with the American public, particularly on economic issues. The administration has been repeatedly accused of downplaying negative economic news, such as the recent inflation spike, while touting positive news, such as the falling unemployment rate.
The downward revision of job creation numbers has cast doubt on the administration's previous claims of economic recovery. Critics have argued that the Biden administration has engaged in "creative accounting" by manipulating economic data to present a more favorable picture of the economy.
The controversy over Raimondo's comments is likely to further erode public confidence in the Biden administration's economic stewardship. The administration will need to address these concerns head-on and provide a clear and transparent explanation of the jobs revision if it wants to restore public trust.
