A recent CBS News poll has revealed that voters are increasingly concerned about President Biden's mental and cognitive health following his poor performance in the presidential debate.
The highly anticipated presidential debate between President Biden and former President Trump on June 27 has sparked significant concerns about Biden's fitness for office, according to a recent poll released by CBS News. The poll, conducted between Friday and Saturday, found a sharp decline in voters' confidence in Biden's cognitive abilities after his debate performance.
Only 18% of voters surveyed expressed confidence in Biden's debate performance, compared to 44% who believed that Trump's performance inspired more confidence. Notably, only 21% of polled voters believed that Biden presented his ideas clearly during the debate.
Biden's Debate Blunders Raise Doubts About His Cognitive Abilities
When asked earlier in June if Biden had the mental and cognitive health to serve as president, 35% of respondents said he did. However, after the debate, that number dropped significantly to 27%. Conversely, the percentage of polled voters who believed that Biden did not have the mental and cognitive health to serve as president increased from 65% to 72%.
In contrast, when the respondents were asked about Trump's mental and cognitive abilities, around 50% voted in favor of Trump, while 49% voted against him. This suggests that concerns about Biden's cognitive abilities are primarily focused on him, rather than being a general reflection of voters' skepticism towards the mental fitness of aging politicians.

Among registered Democrats, the poll found a split in opinion regarding Biden's future in the race. 55% said Biden should continue running, while 45% believed he should step aside.
Biden's poor performance at the CNN presidential debate has fueled speculation about his chances of being re-elected. Both Republicans and Democrats have called for the president to end his campaign.

The New York Times editorial board and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution have both urged Biden to drop out of the race. The Times' editorial board wrote that "the greatest public service Mr. Biden can now perform is to announce that he will not continue to run for re-election."
It remains to be seen whether Biden will heed these calls to withdraw his candidacy. However, the poll results and the widespread concerns raised about his mental and cognitive abilities suggest that he faces an uphill battle in his bid for re-election.
