David Axelrod, a former Obama adviser and CNN political analyst, has denounced President Biden's dismissing of polls showing strong disapproval over his economic handling as a "terrible mistake."
CNN's David Axelrod has vehemently criticized President Biden's defiant stance on the economy, labeling it as a "terrible mistake" that could potentially lead to his reelection defeat.
During a CNN interview, Biden attempted to boast about his economic record, citing one poll that showed most Americans claim they are "personally in good shape" financially. However, he lashed out at other survey findings that indicated widespread dissatisfaction and expressed greater trust in his 2024 rival, former President Trump, on economic matters.
Axelrod expressed deep concern over Biden's attitude, stating that "It is absolutely true. The world was plunged into an economic crisis by the pandemic, and America was plunged into an economic crisis, and we've come back faster than almost any other country, and he's right about that. But that's not the way people are experiencing the economy."
He emphasized that Americans are experiencing economic difficulties through the lens of their daily expenses and criticized Biden for failing to exhibit empathy for their struggles. "Why not lead with empathy?" he questioned.
Axelrod believes that Biden's stance could be detrimental to his reelection campaign, stating that "If he doesn't win this race, it may not be Donald Trump that beats him. It may be his own pride."
Fellow CNN panelist Scott Jennings echoed Axelrod's sentiments, describing Biden's economic messaging as "incredibly weak." He added that "the American people trust Donald Trump more on the economy, they trust him to be a strong leader, and they believe that the world is in chaos because he is weak and Trump is strong."
Polls consistently indicate Trump's perceived advantage over Biden in key swing states. Despite the White House emphasizing strong economic statistics, voters remain dissatisfied with Biden's leadership. A Fox News poll in March revealed that only 38% of Americans approve of Biden's handling of the economy.
The RealClearPolitics average of polls also supports Trump's advantage over Biden in swing states. While the Biden administration touts favorable economic data, Americans' day-to-day experiences paint a different picture, leading to growing disapproval of his economic stewardship. Axelrod's analysis highlights the potential consequences of Biden's failure to address public sentiment, warning that it could result in his defeat in the upcoming election.
