Young progressive voters in Michigan fear President Biden's stance on Israel could split the vote and enable Trump to win the November election. Concerns stem from Biden's perceived failure to take a strong stance against Israel and his failure to demand a ceasefire.
The upcoming November election has young progressive voters in Michigan on edge. They fear that President Biden's stance on Israel could cost him the state, a key battleground with a significant Arab-American population.
According to a recent University of Michigan graduate, Jade Gray, "Michigan is up for grabs... I am genuinely concerned about which way Michigan will go." Gray believes Biden's failure to take a hard stance against Israel has alienated many younger and progressive voters.
Summer Matkin, a Wayne State University student, shares Gray's concerns. She worries that the vote could be split among third-party candidates, ultimately leading to a Trump victory.
The students' discontent stems from Biden's perceived handling of the Israel-Hamas war. They believe he has not done enough to criticize Israel's actions or push for a ceasefire. Many of their friends, they say, plan to either stay home or vote third-party in November as a result.
"No matter how many Taylor Swift references you make, you'll never understand us," said Matkin, criticizing Biden's attempts to connect with young voters. "I think he has handled everything with Israel and Palestine terribly."
The concerns of these students are echoed by protests on college campuses across the country. Anti-Israel demonstrations have disrupted the University of Michigan's graduation ceremony and followed Biden on the campaign trail.
Liberal outlets like MSNBC have warned that Biden risks losing progressive voters in key battleground states over the issue. However, a recent poll reveals that Democrats are divided on the campus protests, with 32% supporting them and 38% agreeing with the protesters' demands but opposing their tactics.
Biden's shifting support for Israel has also drawn criticism from pro-Israel Democrats. Some have criticized his decision to withhold U.S. weapons to Israel as "pandering to the far left."
As the November election approaches, it remains to be seen how Biden's stance on Israel will impact his support among young progressive voters in Michigan. The state's Arab-American population could play a significant role in the outcome, and Biden's ability to address their concerns may be crucial to his success.
