Former Interior Department communications director Tyler Cherry, now an associate communications director at the White House, has been criticized for past social media posts in which he attacked law enforcement, criticized Republicans, and supported the anti-Israel movement.

Former Interior Department communications director Tyler Cherry has been hired in a new role as an associate communications director at the White House, despite sparking controversy last year over social media posts attacking police, criticizing Republicans, and supporting the anti-Israel movement.

Cherry, who worked for Interior Secretary Deb Haaland for more than three years, started his new White House role last week, according to Politico.

However, Cherry has come under fire for a series of social media posts that have surfaced in recent months.

In 2015, he posted: "Praying for #Baltimore, but praying even harder for an end to a capitalistic police state motivated by explicit and implicit racial biases," amid riots that were sparked following the death of Freddie Gray, a Black man, in police custody in Baltimore.

In a separate post months later, he stated: "Apt (sic.) time to recall that the modern day police system is a direct evolution of slave patrols and lynch mobs."

In 2018, Cherry called for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Homeland Security Department agency tasked with preventing cross-border crime and illegal immigration.

Cherry also posted support for "Palestine" on social media in 2014 during the Gaza War in which Palestinian forces, led by the radical Iran-backed terrorist group Hamas, launched hundreds of rockets into Israel, sparking a forceful Israeli response that involved airstrikes and a ground invasion.

"Cheersing in bars to ending the occupation of Palestine — no shame and f--- your glares #ISupportGaza #FreePalestine," Cherry said on July 25, 2014, in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Cherry also has a history of criticizing Republicans on social media, including in 2017 when he said that conservatives in the Republican Party were focused on "white grievance politics."

"The Tea Party was never about the debt/deficit but about racism and white grievance politics," he wrote on X.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, White House senior deputy press secretary Andrew Bates said, "We’re very proud to have Tyler on the team."

Cherry's hiring has raised concerns among some Republicans, who have pointed to his past social media posts as evidence of his bias against law enforcement, conservatives, and Israel.

"Cherry's social media posts are deeply troubling and call into question his suitability for a position of influence in the Biden administration," said Republican National Committee spokesperson Danielle Alvarez. "Cherry's views are out of step with the values of most Americans, and his hiring shows that Biden is out of touch with the concerns of the American people."

The White House has defended Cherry's hiring, saying that he is a "talented and experienced communicator who is committed to serving the American people."

However, the controversy over Cherry's past social media posts is likely to continue, and it remains to be seen whether he will be able to effectively serve in his new role.
