The House Oversight Committee has subpoenaed three senior White House aides to testify about President Biden's mental state, as concerns mount over his fitness for office.

The ongoing scrutiny of President Biden's fitness for office has intensified with the GOP-led House Oversight Committee subpoenaing three of his top aides, demanding depositions concerning his cognitive state. The subpoenas come amidst growing calls for Biden to step aside, with even some of his donors expressing concerns.

In a press release, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, R-Ky., called for accountability within the White House. He alleged that the three aides, Anthony Bernal, Annie Tomasini, and Ashley Williams, are "running interference" for Biden to shield him from scrutiny.

The committee's allegations are based on a report by Axios, which cited a former Biden staffer who claimed that Bernal, Tomasini, and Williams have created "a protective bubble around" the president. The former staffer stated that Biden is "staffed so closely that he's lost all independence."

The subpoenas were issued following Biden's widely criticized performance in a recent debate, raising further questions about his mental acuity. The committee hopes to determine the scope of the aides' job responsibilities and whether they are acting in the best interests of the president and the country.

The committee's concerns extend beyond Biden's mental state, as they also allege that the three aides were involved in the scandal of the president's alleged mishandling of classified files. The Oversight Committee said five total White House employees and a Department of Defense employee were involved in the movement of boxes that were later found to contain classified materials.

Special Counsel Robert Hur, who investigated Biden's handling of classified records, concluded that while no criminal charges were warranted, Biden is "a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."

The White House has dismissed the subpoenas as a "baseless political stunt," calling the committee's attacks on the president "discredited." Spokesperson Ian Sams accused Representative Comer of weaponizing subpoenas to get headlines instead of engaging in legitimate oversight.

Despite the White House's defense, the subpoenas underscore the mounting pressure on Biden, who has faced questions about his cognitive abilities throughout his presidency.

As the investigation continues, the American people will be closely watching the outcome to determine whether the concerns about Biden's fitness for office are substantiated or politically motivated. The subpoenas have set the stage for a significant political and legal battle, with the potential to shape the future of the Biden administration.
