The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced changes to its selection rules, including a reduction in the waiting period for coaching candidates from five seasons out of the game to one season, making Bill Belichick eligible for induction with the class of 2026.

Bill Belichick's inevitable enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame has taken a step closer, thanks to a recent rule change.

The Hall of Fame announced Friday that the waiting period for coaching candidates has been reduced from five seasons out of the game to one season. This means Belichick, who retired from the New England Patriots after last season, is now eligible for induction with the class of 2026.

Under the previous rules, Belichick would not have been eligible until 2029. However, the only reason he will not be inducted with the Class of 2025 is that the selection process has already started.

Belichick, 72, spent 24 years as the Patriots' head coach, winning six Super Bowls with the franchise. He also won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants as defensive coordinator, giving him a total of eight Super Bowl titles, the most for any individual in NFL history.

Despite his success, Belichick had head coaching interviews with the Atlanta Falcons this past hiring cycle but was ultimately passed over for Raheem Morris. However, there have been no indications that the legendary coach is ready to retire, meaning he may land a job in the next coaching cycle while also having spent the required year out of coaching to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

While he is out of coaching, Belichick will be keeping busy with several media appearances. He will appear on "Monday Night Football's" "ManningCast," the CW's "Inside the NFL," and will make weekly appearances on ESPN with "The Pat McAfee Show."

Belichick is considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. He is known for his defensive acumen, his ability to get the most out of his players, and his success in the postseason.

With the rule change, Belichick's induction into the Hall of Fame is now a virtual certainty. It is only a matter of time before he takes his rightful place among the legends of the game.

In addition to the change in the waiting period for coaching candidates, the Hall of Fame also announced several other changes to its selection rules. These include:

* Expanding the Seniors Committee from nine to 12 members.

* Allowing the Seniors Committee to nominate up to four players each year, instead of three.

* Allowing the Contributors Committee to nominate up to two non-players each year, instead of one.

* Creating a new "Special Contributor" category to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the game of football but do not meet the criteria for induction under the other categories.

These changes are intended to make the Hall of Fame more inclusive and to ensure that all deserving candidates are considered for induction.
