Real Time host Bill Maher engaged in a heated debate with comedian Bill Burr over the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, vehemently asserting that Israel holds the moral high ground in the face of Hamas' deadly attacks.
Bill Maher, the outspoken host of "Real Time," ignited a fiery discussion with fellow comedian Bill Burr on the "Club Random" podcast, passionately defending Israel's position in the escalating conflict with Hamas. Maher argued that Israel possesses the "moral high ground" in this battle, sparking a tense exchange with Burr.
"College campuses throughout America had people demonstrating for Hamas," Maher claimed, drawing an immediate response from Burr, who clarified that the protesters were supporting the Palestinian cause. Undeterred, Maher countered by equating support for Palestinians with support for Hamas.
Burr, known for his acerbic wit, expressed his support for "the kids," seemingly referring to those affected by the conflict in Gaza, a stance that visibly irked Maher. "It's easy to say, 'I'm for the kids,'" Maher retorted. "Who's not for the kids? It comes down to real hard-nosed decisions… Israel got attacked."
Maher vehemently condemned the international outcry against Israel's retaliatory strikes, emphasizing that Israel is the only country in the world that faces such scrutiny for defending itself. "They get attacked, and as soon as they counterattack it's like, ‘Well we gotta stop this s—t now,’" Maher lamented. "Don’t attack them. There is a very simple solution to all these problems in the Middle East. Stop attacking Israel."
Burr, with his trademark sarcasm, quipped, "Let's go to Russia and the Ukraine. How do you solve that one, Bill?"
Maher responded with a pragmatic assessment of the futility of war, stating that it would be impossible to enforce a no-war scenario without resorting to war itself. "What would be the sense in making it illegal? That’s really going to stop Putin? No," Maher argued.
Burr then posed the question of how war is still legal in the modern era, given the widespread cancellation of various behaviors and practices. Maher offered a sobering response, acknowledging that enforcing a no-war policy would require going to war to do so.
As the conversation progressed, Maher asserted that the Middle East conflict is not Burr's area of expertise, drawing a fiery response from the comedian. "It isn’t your thing. It isn’t. You’re like that guy that has a fantasy football team and thinks he’s a f-----g GM," Burr retorted. "Like, why am I f-----g listening to you like you like you’ve done something? What have you done in Washington? Nothing."
Despite the heated exchange, the comedians swiftly moved on to other topics, leaving the Middle East debate unresolved. Maher's staunch defense of Israel's actions and Burr's skepticism toward Maher's claims highlighted the complex and often divisive nature of the ongoing conflict.
