Led by Rep. Mark Kelly, the bipartisan task force investigating the assassination attempt on former President Trump visited the shooting site and vowed to "get the truth" about the security lapse.

Rep. Mark Kelly (R-Pa.), the chairman of the bipartisan House task force investigating the assassination attempt on former President Trump, has vowed to uncover the truth behind the security lapse that allowed the shooting to occur.

"I do believe the American people can handle the truth, and we're going to get the truth for them," Kelly said during an appearance on "America's Newsroom" on Tuesday.

The task force visited the shooting site in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Monday to gather evidence and speak with witnesses. Kelly expressed concern over the "casual" preparation for the event and questioned why law enforcement officers did not respond more quickly to reports of a gunman on the roof.

"I just don't understand when you have the most elite groups of law enforcement people in the world, whose sole job is to protect that candidate, how could we have failed?" Kelly said.

The task force's investigation will focus on determining whether there were any failures in communication or coordination among law enforcement agencies. Kelly stressed that the task force members, who include both Republicans and Democrats, are committed to impartiality and transparency.

"We identified ourselves as 13 Americans who are going to get the answers for the American people," Kelly said. "Give it to them straight. Give it to them honest."

On Monday, Kelly raised questions about a potential delay in the response from law enforcement when gunman Thomas Crooks was first spotted on the roof.

"I want to know, who was quarterbacking it? Who was the one that made the decision?" Kelly told Fox News Digital. "… When the sniper already had the shooter in his sights, what we've heard so far, he was waiting to get authorization to take the shot.… Some quarterback's got to make that call. If they're not making that call, the team can't move."

The task force's findings will be made public at the conclusion of its investigation, which is expected to take several months. Kelly emphasized that the goal is to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

"We've got to understand that we can never allow this to happen again," Kelly said. "And it's the preparation for anything that is the key to a successful ending. The preparation in this case was very light, not deep enough, and it wasn't coordinated."
