Health officials in Colorado have reported the fourth case of bird flu infection in a human in the United States, prompting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue an alert. The infected individual is a farmworker who had direct contact with infected dairy cows. While the risk to the general public remains low, health officials urge caution for those exposed to infected animals.

The recent detection of bird flu in a Colorado farmworker has raised concerns among health officials, leading to an alert issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This marks the fourth reported case of human infection in the United States, highlighting the potential risks associated with bird flu.

The infected individual, a male farmworker, had direct contact with infected dairy cows on a northeast Colorado farm. Subsequently, he developed mild symptoms, including pink eye, a common indication of bird flu infection. Health officials followed the guidelines of the CDC and administered antiviral treatment, resulting in a successful recovery.

According to Dr. Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), the risk of bird flu remains low for the general public. However, she emphasizes the significance of taking precautions for those who regularly interact with infected animals.

"The risk to most people remains low. Avian flu viruses are currently spreading among animals, but they are not adapted to spread from person to person," said Dr. Herlihy.

She further explained that people with regular exposure to infected animals are at an increased risk and should prioritize protective measures during interactions with sick animals.

Three previous human infection cases have been linked to cows in dairy workers from Texas and Michigan since March. Notably, pink eye was also a symptom in two of these cases, while one individual experienced mild respiratory symptoms. In 2022, the initial US case of bird flu was detected in a Colorado farmworker who was exposed to infected poultry.

Currently, the CDC's primary concern is the potential for human-to-human transmission, which poses a more significant threat compared to animal-to-human transmission. As an airborne virus, bird flu can spread through respiratory droplets, similar to the flu virus.

"Right now, the most important thing to know is that people who have regular exposure to infected animals are at increased risk of infection and should take precautions when they have contact with sick animals," emphasized Dr. Herlihy.

To minimize the risk of infection, health officials recommend practicing basic hygiene measures such as frequent handwashing, avoiding contact with sick animals, and using personal protective equipment when handling poultry or other animals that may carry the virus. Additionally, thoroughly cooking poultry and eggs is crucial to prevent contamination.

Ongoing surveillance efforts continue to monitor the spread of bird flu among wild and domestic birds, as well as human cases. Health officials remain vigilant in providing guidance and responding to potential outbreaks.
