President Biden's recent attempt to regain support from Black voters has met with strong criticism, with accusations of "race baiting" and claims that he is out of touch with their concerns. Amid a decline in support, Black voters demand accountability and a shift in approach.
President Biden's commencement address at Morehouse College was met with a chorus of criticism from Black voters, who accused him of "race baiting" and failing to address their real concerns. The President's speech questioned whether American democracy worked for African-American graduates, a statement many found both condescending and inaccurate.
Virginia business owner Ajay Brewer echoed these sentiments, asserting that the Democratic Party has fostered a culture of "hopelessness" among Black voters. He accused them of relying on victimhood narratives and government handouts to maintain their support.
"We don't need folks to do things for us. We don't need people to baby us," Brewer stated. "It's kind of disturbing that they pander to us in this manner because they can depend on us at a clip of 90% plus, but I think that's going to change this election."
According to a recent Fox News poll, Biden's support among Black voters has declined by 7% since October 2020. Conversely, former President Trump's support has increased by 9% during the same period.
Georgia independent voter Bernadette Wright emphasized the need for accountability and a shift away from racial categorizations. She expressed frustration with the lack of attention given to pressing issues affecting Black communities, such as business growth and local government involvement.
"America is changing, and people are becoming more sensitive to what's affecting us as individuals, as business owners, as parents. Not just because we're Black, not just because we're women, not just because we're men. They can't keep putting us in these race baskets," Wright declared.
Some Morehouse students and faculty protested Biden's speech by turning their backs on him during his address. The protest was a reminder of the ongoing unrest at college campuses nationwide, where anti-Israel protests have led to the cancellation of commencement ceremonies at certain universities.
Biden's recent speech comes as Democrats face an uphill battle to retain Black voter support. The party has historically relied heavily on this demographic, but recent polls indicate a significant decline in their approval ratings.
Black voters are demanding a change in approach, one that focuses on addressing specific concerns and moving beyond race-based rhetoric. They seek accountability, transparency, and a shift towards policies that empower individuals and communities rather than fostering dependency.
