Secretary of State Antony Blinken has remained silent on his alleged involvement in efforts to discredit the abandoned laptop of Hunter Biden, which later served as evidence in Biden's federal trial. Former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell has testified that Blinken played a role in the public statement claiming the laptop was part of a Russian disinformation campaign.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has faced scrutiny for his alleged role in suppressing the Hunter Biden laptop story in the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election. Former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell testified to Congress that Blinken, then a senior adviser to Biden's campaign, played a key part in the public statement signed by intelligence officials claiming the laptop was part of a Russian disinformation campaign.

According to Morell's testimony, Blinken reached out to him around October 17, 2020, to discuss the New York Post's reporting on the laptop. While Blinken's outreach was initially presented as gathering Morell's reaction, it set in motion the events leading to the public statement.

Morell stated that one of the goals of the statement was to assist then-Vice President Biden in the upcoming presidential debate and help him win the election. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner conclude that Biden's campaign played an active role in the origin of the public statement, suppressing the Hunter Biden story and potentially influencing the outcome of the election.

Three days after the letter from former intelligence officials, Biden used it as a talking point in the final presidential debate against then-President Trump. In subsequent years, numerous media outlets have confirmed the authenticity of the laptop, which was used by the federal government as evidence in Hunter Biden's recent gun crime trial.

Emails from the laptop show that Blinken and Biden have friendly personal ties dating back over a decade. In 2015, Hunter Biden attempted to schedule a meeting with Blinken, then deputy secretary of state, to seek his advice. The meeting was later rescheduled to July 2015 due to the death of Beau Biden.

After the meeting, Blinken emailed Biden, expressing it was "great to see" him and "catch up." He also joked that a woman in his office found Biden "pleasant on the eyes." The State Department has not responded to requests for comment on the nature of the meeting.

Blinken has previously denied involvement in the creation of the letter from former intel officials, stating that he "doesn't do politics." However, he and his wife have donated approximately $70,000 to Democrats in recent decades.
