Edward Durr, a former truck driver and state senator who upset an incumbent Senate president, launches his Republican campaign for New Jersey governor, claiming he represents the voice of the working class and can shake up Trenton's status quo.
Edward Durr, a former truck driver who made national headlines in 2021 by unseating longtime state Senate President Stephen Sweeney, has announced his bid for the New Jersey governorship. Durr, who is challenging Republican front-runner Jack Ciattarelli and state Sen. Jon Bramnick in the primary, believes his campaign mirrors his upset victory over Sweeney and reflects a growing grassroots movement in the state.
Despite identifying as a conservative, Durr distances himself from the "ultra-conservative" label, describing himself as open-minded with traditional views on fiscal responsibility, public safety, parental rights, and the Second Amendment. He believes he can appeal to moderate-to-conservative New Jerseyans who have been overlooked by the state's Democratic leadership.
Durr's main focus is on empowering working-class citizens, who he believes have been ignored by Trenton politicians. He vows to give people a voice and address their concerns regarding cost of living, public safety, and education. Durr also believes that former President Trump has a strong chance of winning New Jersey due to his appeal to the masses and the disillusionment with Democratic policies.
While acknowledging the challenges of working with a Democratic legislature, Durr expresses optimism that he can find common ground with Democrats on fiscal responsibility. He suggests that there is waste in the state budget that can be eliminated to allow for economic growth.
Durr cites the high-profile indictments of Senator Robert Menendez as an example of how corruption has fueled public distrust in New Jersey officials. He believes that voters are fed up and ready to elect representatives who will prioritize their needs.
If elected, Durr plans to address the issue of anti-Israel protests on college campuses, balancing First Amendment rights with the need to maintain order and prevent intimidation of students. He believes that protesters have overstepped boundaries by interfering with student life.
Durr's campaign strategy centers on voter turnout, which was key to his victory over Sweeney. He recognizes that many voters who supported him in 2021 did not return to the polls in 2023, contributing to his defeat. By mobilizing his base, he aims to replicate his previous success and shake up the New Jersey political landscape.
Despite facing a Republican primary and a potentially formidable Democratic incumbent, Durr remains confident in his ability to connect with New Jerseyans and bring about change in Trenton. He believes that his outsider status and focus on the working class can resonate with voters who are seeking a new direction for the state.
