In a statement through the MLB Players Association, Martinez expressed regret for using the banned substance. He explained that he and his girlfriend were seeking fertility treatments in the Dominican Republic during the offseason. The fertility clinic prescribed Martinez a medication called Rejun 50, which contained Clomiphene.

Martinez stated that he did not disclose the medication to his team or the MLBPA due to concerns about privacy. However, he accepted full responsibility for his actions and agreed to the suspension.

The Blue Jays organization expressed disappointment over Martinez's suspension. General manager Ross Atkins emphasized the team's unwavering support for MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and their commitment to maintaining a level playing field.

Martinez, 22, is an international signing from the Dominican Republic who joined the Blue Jays' farm system in 2018. He quickly rose through the ranks, reaching the Triple-A level this season. He played in 63 games for Triple-A Buffalo, hitting 16 home runs and batting .260.

The suspension is a significant setback for Martinez's promising career. He had been considered one of the Blue Jays' top prospects, ranked as high as 75th in Baseball America's rankings. As part of the suspension, Martinez will undergo mandatory counseling and treatment under MLB's drug program. He is eligible to return to the Blue Jays on September 23, 2024.
